PARTICIPANTS OF THE PROGRAMME „CREATIVE MENTORSHIP“ IN STUDY VISIT IN NIS WITH FOCUS ON DECENTRALISATION

On Saturday, 21 April 2018 a small „Creative Mentorship“ delegation that consisted of participants, mentors and alumni of the programme, visited Nis and some of its key institutions and cultural organisations.

On this occasion, we had a pleasure to be guided through Banovina building and introduced with the activities of the University Library “Nikola Tesla” and the Student Cultural Center of Nis. We visited the Gallery of contemporary painting, peeked behind the scenes of the Nisville festival and finally, we went to the famous DELI in the Davidova street.

In the University library we spoke with alumni of the programme Andrijana Stojanovic, manager of the Informative department of the library and Aleksandra Strahinić, until recently PR of the Student Cultural Center of Nis. After those inspirational talks, we went to the Gallery of contemporary painting, where we met with one of our hosts, Milica Todorović, art director of the Gallery. We debated about visual arts in small, local communities in Serbia and how important the existence of Galleries and their successful work is. In the debate participated also Slađana Petrović Varagic, curator and, until recently director of the Cultural Center in Pozega, and Milan Marković who was a curator of the Gallery in Smederevo and now is performing duty of the museum educator in the Museum of Smederevo.

We walked to the spot where turkish bath – hamam was settled in the Nis fortress, and where soon will be opened the Museum of Jazz. We met and spoke with Ivan Blagojević, the founder and director of the Nisville festival.

We continued our tour, enjoying a beautiful, sunny day and made a stop at the monument od Saban Bajramovic. On the wharf of Nisava, Aleksandra Mirić, who holds a PHD in architecture and archeology, introduced us with history of Nis, and we spoke about decentralisation with Mladen Jovanović, president of the Managing board of the National Coalition for Decentralization.

Finally, we visited the great DELI space, that was founded, a few years ago, by Proaktiv, an important Citizens’ coalition from Nis. Nenad Stojanović, its founder and  manager, presented us DELI’s activities. We had a fruitful conversation with out alumna from Nis, Snezana Andric from the organisation Young Ambassadors, and participants of the fourth cycle of the “Creative Mentorship” programme, Dunja Pešut, professor of Serbian language and literature from Backa Topola, and Oleg Misiraca, cultural event producer and activist, about the significance of supporting the creativity of young people, incitement of the creative industries and inclusion of the young people in cultural and creative life of a local community.

We would like to thank Dr Predrag Cveticanin for his precious contribution that made this trip even more interesting, and our hosts for the unforgettable experience and the time they dedicated to introduce us with the part of the cultural and artistic scene of Nis. We are very sorry that we could not stay longer, since there are so many things to learn about Nis and its cultural institutions, and so many inspirational people to meet. Lot of cities in Serbia have so much to offer, but, unfortunately, it is not widely known.
